Adios, Yahoo! Domains Print E-mail

It's just too bad.

For years, we've recommended Yahoo! Domains as an excellent domain registrar. Their initial domain registration rates were as low as $9.95 for .com & .net, with renewal fees topping out somewhere around $12.95/yr. In fact, 27 of the 32 domain names that I own personally are with Yahoo!

15th Century Proverb Guy enters, stage left. "All good things must come to an end."

Well said. Just last week, Yahoo! announced a 350% increase [cnet.com] in domain registrations - including renewals. That's a jump of $25/domain, and in my case, an extra $675/year. Yahoo has begun defending the move already:

Yahoo said the $25 price increase is primarily being instituted to match the cost of doing business, and that registering domains--the process of creating a new Web address--can cost even more with other Web sites.

Well, it may cost more with some companies, but it costs an awful lot less with others. Accordingly, we've officially left the Yahoo! Domains train, and have purchased tickets on the Go Daddy express.

Transferring your domain from Yahoo! to someone else is intended to be streamlined, but it still requires a bit more effort than many of you might be willing to bear. If you're interested in saving some coin by switching to another registrar, and want a little help in making the move, send us a note. We'll help you with your transfer for $25 ($5 per additional domain).
